Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: What to Remember Before You Head to the Cinema

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a highly anticipated film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while it may not be as connected to the larger MCU as some other recent films, there are still some important things to remember before heading to the Cinema.

First, it’s important to remember that the Guardians of the Galaxy are a group of misfit heroes from across the galaxy, led by Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord. They’ve faced off against powerful villains like Ronan the Accuser and Thanos, and have formed strong bonds with each other along the way.

In terms of specific MCU films to watch before seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there are a few that stand out. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 2 are obviously essential viewing, as they establish the characters and their relationships with each other. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame are also important, as they feature the Guardians working alongside other heroes to stop the villainous Thanos.

But if you only have 20 minutes to catch up on everything, here are a few facts to know:

  • Drax had a family, but Thanos killed them.
  • Sylvester Stallone is in these movies.
  • Yondu sacrificed himself in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to save Peter, and now Kraglin has his whistle arrow.
  • Rocket’s had a very hard life and is the result of some particularly cruel animal experimentation.
  • Nebula’s whole body was replaced, piece by piece, by Thanos
  • The original Gamora died in Avengers: Infinity War and now an alternate-universe version of her is hanging out with the Guardians.

Films to watch:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a standalone film that doesn’t rely heavily on the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe for its plot. Unlike movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there aren’t many connections or Easter eggs that only completists will catch.
Of course, to fully understand the characters and their relationships, it’s recommended that viewers watch the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and the Christmas Special. Additionally, as the Guardians have interacted with other heroes in the past, it’s important to have seen Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Thor: Love and Thunder is also mentioned as a recommended film to watch, likely because of the Guardians’ appearance in the film’s post-credits scene. However, outside of these few films, there’s not much else that viewers need to worry about in terms of understanding the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
